During Venice's supremacy of the Adriatic region, the Doge (chief magistrate) would periodically perform a ritual "blessing of the sea." This ritual, and others used a very large gilded galley called a Bucintoro. Several Bucintoros were used between 1277 and the late 1700's. The last was built in 1728 and was ultimately destroyed during the French occupation in 1797. A model of that last Bucintoro was commissioned in 1824 and exists today in the Arsenale Museum. It is a fabulous creation, one that carvers and fans of gilded carvings will enjoy immensely. The original boat was about 44 meters long, roughly 143 feet. The model has no size or scale indicated and I found no documentation about such. However, I remember it as about 8 to 10 feet long. I didn't think to try for more careful measurement. Using that rough estimate, we have a scale of maybe 1:18 to 1:25. The best size estimate I can offer is the length of the lion on the bow spirit is about 3.5 inches, 9 cm. As you can see, the carvings are wonderful and the craftsmanship excellent. Note the parquet deck. It is not painted. It is actual parquet construction.
