The ships of the Hansetic League
In 1462 a French ship brought a cargo of salt from La Rochelle to Gdansk. The ship had to be repaired in Gdansk, and, after the ship's owner did not pay the costs the ship was confiscated by the city. The ship was probably one of the first large carvel-built vessels of the Hanseatic League, with approximately 50 m overall length, 42 m in the water line and 12 m wide. The carvel construction represented a significant technical advance over the traditional clinker construction in Hansa cogs, which did not provide enough stability for that large ships.
In 1470 the ship was refitted as a man of war and renamed "Peter von Danzig". Captain Paul Beneke successfully used the ship in hunting English merchantmen in the North Sea with a letter of marque from the Hanseatic League. The naval war with England lasted until 1474, when the Treaty of Utrecht confirmed the privileges of the Hanseatic League and the Steelyard in London.
In 1478 the "Peter von Danzig" was scrapped.
The Gdansk ship builders must have studied the French carvel-built ship very carefully. After 1475 their shipyards started to build large ships using that technology. A modern day replica of such a Hanse carvel ship is "Lisa von Luebeck".
